Back in 1959, business partners Hal Hulbert and Stan Prouty mortgaged their houses, sold their cars, and banked their dreams on a restaurant space at a prime spot on NE 39th and Broadway. They got additional financing from their next door neighbor Benjamin Franklin Savings and Loan, which inspired them to develop the Benjamin Franklin and Poor Richard’s Almanack theme for their restaurant. Although that savings and loan is no longer there, Poor Richards continues to operate profitably. “Who knew we’d outlast our bank?” Hal recalls.

In those early years, Poor Richard’s soon became a Portland icon, winning menu awards from the National Restaurant Association and hosting special events. In 1960, Hal and Stan brought the now world-

renowned Guarneri String Quartet to Portland for their first-ever West Coast concert, performing right in the dining area of the restaurant! At the time, Stan managed the kitchen, while Hal ran the “front of the store”.

When Poor Richard’s began offering the famous “Two-Fer” special in 1972 there was no idea that it would make the restaurant a Hollywood District landmark. The deal soon became a permanent offering, serving thousands of families good meals at a fair price. In time, Stan sold his interest in the business to Hal, who then became sole proprietor. Hal continues to run the restaurant, and is eager to see that all your needs and wishes are met.
